Crossing the border and the Hungary vignette
Last checked: 2 November 2026
If you continue on a motorway or expressway after the border, the vignette must already be valid when you enter the toll section. Buy it online before you set off: then there is no need to queue at the border.
Typical entry points
- From Austria: the M1 motorway at Hegyeshalom, and the M85 coming from Sopron.
- From Slovakia: the M15 at Rajka; around Komárom and Tornyosnémeti, the Hungarian expressway network.
- From Romania: the M43 at Csanádpalota; around Nyírábrány and Ártánd, main roads connect.
- From Serbia: the M5 at Röszke.
- From Croatia: the M7 at Letenye.
If you continue on a main road after the border, no vignette is needed there; it is only required on toll motorways and expressways. The sections are described in the article Toll roads.
What to take with you
- driving licence and vehicle registration certificate,
- proof of compulsory motor third-party liability insurance,
- mandatory equipment: first-aid kit, warning triangle, high-visibility vest.
Frequently asked questions
Can the vignette also be bought at the border?
There are physical sales points near the border as well, but online is simpler: the vignette is registered after payment and the confirmation is sent by e-mail.
Which country code should be entered?
Always the vehicle's own country code (for example UK, IRL or D), not the destination. Details: Licence plate and country code.
Before the trip, order the vignette online.
