Surcharge without a valid vignette

Anyone who uses toll roads without a valid e-vignette pays a surcharge (in Hungarian pótdíj). In 2026 the basic surcharge is 27 790 Ft if it is paid within 60 days of delivery of the notice; after that, the increased surcharge of 95 730 Ft applies.

The surcharge is the same in categories D1M, D1, D2 and U. If a vignette in a cheaper category than the vehicle's own was bought, the surcharge difference is payable; for a more expensive category or one with the same fee, it is not.
How are checks made?
Checks are carried out around the clock by fixed camera gantries and mobile enforcement vehicles, based on the licence plate. The surcharge payment notice arrives by post.
How to avoid it
- Buy the vignette before entering the toll section.
- Check the licence plate, the country code and the category (vehicle categories).
- If there is a mistake, request a correction at once (wrong licence plate).
